The Konrads were formed in June 1962 in Bromley with a line-up of 15-year-old Davie Jones on lead vocals, Conn tenor sax (b. David Robert Hayward Jones, Wednesday, January 8, 1947, 40 Stansfield Road, Brixton, South West London, England d. Friday, January 10, 2016 at his apartment in Lafeyette Street, Manhattan, New York City, N.Y., USA), 15-year-old George Underwood on lead vocals (b. Richard George Underwood, Wednesday, February 5, 1947, Murray Avenue, Bromley, Kent, England), 17-year-old Neville Wills on lead guitar (b. Late 1945, Shirley, Kent, England d. 1981, London, England), Andrew Baldock on bass (b. Late 1945, Bromley, Kent, England) and 17-year-old Dave Crook on drums (b. David Crook, Late 1945, Bromley, Kent, England).
The Konrads had been formed in Early 1962 by Bromley Technical High School, Keston, Kent classmates Crook, Baldock and Wills as The Kon-rads, but when Jones joined in June 1962, the hyphen was removed at Jones' insistence and thus the Kon-rads became The Konrads.
Also, Jones changed his name to Dave Jay. He played about 40 gigs with the band. In 1961 Crook, Baldock and Wills had loose, school boy jams.
Jones had lived at 40 Stansfield Road, Brixton, South West London and was the son of John Jones (b. Haywood Stenton Jones, Thursday, November 21, 1912, 41 St. Sepulchre Gate, Doncaster, South Yorkshire, England d. Tuesday, August 5, 1969, 4 Plaistow Grove, Sundridge Park, Kent, England of pneumonia) and Mrs. Peggy Jones (b. Margaret Mary Burns, Thursday, October 2, 1913, Shorncliffe Army Camp near Cheriton, Kent, England d. Monday, April 2, 2001, Hertfordshire, England).
He went to Stockwell Infants School, Stockwell, South West London till he was six and then moved in 1953 to Bickley, Kent then Bromley Common, Kent and then in 1955 settled at 4 Plaistow Grove, Sundridge Park, Kent. Jones went to Burnt Ash Junior School, Rangefield Road, Bromley and after failing his 11-plus he went to Bromley Technical High School, Oakley Road, Keston near Bromley on Wednesday, August 27, 1958. Jones left school on Sunday, July 7, 1963.
After leaving school at 16½, he joined an advertising agency as a Junior Visualizer/Paste Up Artist. He joined Yorkshire based company Nevin D. Hurst (Advertising) Ltd. at their offices at 98 New Bond Street, Mayfair, West London. He left after four or five months to concentrate on his musical career.
In 1968 - 1969 to earn extra money, he worked on a casual basis for Legastat Ltd 57 Carey Street, Holborn, West Central London.
Underwood had been to Bromley Technical High School, Oakley Road, Keston near Bromley with Jones and had been in a number of bands like George and the Dragons who included Jones, The Hillsiders and The Spitfires.
The Konrads many rehearsals were held at the Church Hall, Bromley Common, Bromley.
In October 1962 Crook was replaced by drummer Dave Hadfield (b. David Anthony Heath-Hadfield, Wednesday, February 12, 1941, Rochdale, Lancashire, England). Underwood was upset at Crook being replaced and he left in November 1962.
Hadfield was also The Konrads manager.
Hadfield had spent his childhood in South Africa and had returned to Cheshunt, Hertfordshire as a teenager, where he attended Cheshunt Secondary Modern School, Windmill Lane, Cheshunt. Among his contemporizes at the school was a guitarist named Harry Webb (b. Harry Rodger Webb, Monday, October 14, 1940, King George Hospital, Victoria Street, Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, British India), who would later become better known as Cliff Richard with his Shadows. He did a few gigs with Webb.
At 16 in 1958 Hadfield joined the Merchant Navy and became a Fourth Officer on passenger liner. He retired in Late 1962 and moved to live with his grandmother in Bromley, Kent.
It was then that Hadfield placed an advert on the notice board of the window of Vic Furlong's record shop in Bromley near Bromley South Station looking for a band. Furlong supplied a notice board where groups looking for members and members looking for groups that could offer their services. Hadfield stated in his advert he was 'ex-Cliff Richard drummer' looking for work.
The Konrads lead guitarist Neville Willis phoned the number given on the advert, which was Hadfield's grandmother's phone number. Willis told Hadfield they were looking for a drummer. He went to Willis' house for rehearsals and was in. Not long after joining, he met the rest of the band and he became the group's leader. Hadfield was six-years older than Jones and also older than the rest of the band.
In November 1962 Baldock left and was replaced by 18-year-old Rocky Shahan on bass, vocals (b. Shahan Chowdhury, 1944, British India now Pakistan).
Also joining in November 1962 was 17-year-old Roger Ferris on lead vocals (b. 1945), Christine Patton on lead vocals (b. Late 1945 d. 2007 of cancer), Stella Patton on lead vocals (b. 1943) and 16-year-old Alan Dodds on rhythm guitar (b. 1946).
Dodds learnt to play guitar at age 10.
On Saturday, June 15, 1963 The Konrads 22-year-old drummer Dave Hadfield and the bands lead vocalist Stella Patton got married at St. George's Parish Church, Albermarle Road, Beckenham and at a wedding reception party at the Beckenham Public Hall, Bromley Road, Beckenham the Konrads played a short set.
On Friday, August 30, 1963 The Konrads entered the famous Decca Studios at 165 Broadhurst Gardens, West Hampstead, North West London. This was their first time in a studio, and they recorded one song 'I Never Dreamed' (Davie Jones, Roger Ferris, Alan Dodds).
Ferris holds a massive place in rock history. When the band entered Decca’s West Hampstead Studios, to cut their formal demo tape, Ferris was actually selected as the main lead vocalist for the track 'I Never Dreamed.'
A 16-year-old Davie Jones was relegated to singing the harmony backing vocals and executing the saxophone fills on his Conn tenor sax.
Lead vocalist David Jay (David Jones/ Bowie) played his final gig with The Konrads on New Year's Eve, December 31, 1963 at The Justin Hall, Beckenham Road, West Wickham, Kent and the group continued without him with new members.
It was also rhythm guitarist Alan Dodds final gig.
In Late 1964 Ferris, Mrs. Christine Heath-Hadfield and her younger sister Miss Stella Patton left.
They were also joined in Late 1964 by Tony Edwards on a Vox Continental or Farfisa Compact organ, co-writer (b. Anthony Edwards, 1945-1947).
In October 1965 The Konrads released their only UK single 'Baby It's To Late Now' (Chapman, Burrows) and 'I'm Over You' (Spiro) on CBS 211812. It was produced by Hal Ashley.
In December 1966 The Konrads released their only US single 'I Thought Of You Last Night' (Ralph Freed) and 'I Don't Know How Much' (Neville Willis, Tony Edwards) on Decca 32060. These tracks were recorded in 1965.
In 1965 The Konrads were joined by Graham Sampson on rhythm guitar, backing vocals, who was in the band for two years and was a good friend of the band's founder lead guitarist Neville Wills.
They also had woodwind, bass and multi-instrumentalist Mick Millo (b. Michael Millo) in the band who joined in 1965?
It seems Sampson and Millo joined in jam sessions at Wills bungalow in Chislehurst, Kent. They all lived in the Bromley/Chislehurst area.
In late 1967 Willis called an end to The Konrads.
